LitCam - Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign

The international campaign for the promotion of literacy and basic education, was first launched at the 2006 Frankfurt Book Fair together with its partners, the German Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL).

The “Literacy Site” was created in co-operation with Google to provide a dedicated search engine in English, Spanish and German specifically for media offerings in the fields of literacy, basic education and media literacy.

In 2007, the Swiss e-learning developer Avallain became a further LitCam cooperation partner.

With LitCam and its commitment to literacy, the Frankfurt Book Fair wants to contribute to the dream of providing all people with access to this freedom.

LitCam Conference

The campaign's main platform is an annual international conference attracting organisations, experts, trainers and policy makers from the fields of literacy and education. The International LitCam Conference 2008 will take place on Tuesday, 14 October.

With Turkey as the Guest of Honour at the Book Fair 2008 and in light of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, for the first time in 2008, the LitCam Conference will have a special theme: “Literacy & Integration”.

The EU Commission Directorate-General for Education and Culture will be the co-organisator of this conference. Therefore the EU Commissioner Leonard Orban will be an additional keynote speaker (multilingualism and integration). The first keynote speaker will be the Turkish Professor Kagitcibasi. The German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be invited to talk about integration and education. Shashi Tharoor is once again the patron and afterwards there will be a get together in the evening.

Aside from podium discussions, organisations from Turkey (ACEC), the USA (National Center of Literacy), Germany and Burkina Faso (Tintua) will be invited to make presentations. The thematic workshops will be held on the first day of the Book Fair, Wednesday, 15. October.

Due to popular demand, for the first time in 2008, the LitCam Lounge will remain open for the entire duration of the Fair. The lounge serves as a meeting point and platform to present LitCam at the Frankfurt Book Fair, its partners and participating organisations from the current and previous years.

The LitCam Football Meets Culture Project

With the co-operation of the football school of Eintracht Frankfurt (the local professional team), in April 2007 the first LitCam Football Meets Culture project began. In this year’s project, the participating children attend two training sessions a week (except during school holidays), each which consists of two hours of football training and supplementary learning. In addition, there are special excursions such as a visit to a printing press, a communication museum and participation in an anti-aggression course. At the end of the year, a rap-poetry workshop is planned with Bas Bötcher.
This year-long project was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Aventis Foundation.
